Hot Sounds In The City
Music and Inspiration with Adam Barley!

Hello Adam! Thank you for speaking with me today!
Tell us about your latest release!
Aphelyon is my latest single release - it is also the name of my new solo project. This project is a blend of some of the most influential musical genres throughout my life and music career -- electronica, lo-if house, and hip hop. You will hear a lot of guitar work throughout the tunes as guitar is my main instrument. When performed live, the songs will have open sections of groove/dance based guitar improvisation.
What was the creative process for it?
The only aspect of the creative process I feel like I have control over is putting in the hours - working as hard as I can, and continuing to be disciplined with my craft. The rest takes care of itself in a way I don't totally understand, but is completely invigorating and awe inspiring -- closely related to the sense of ease, flow and connection that comes from meditation, or live music, or whatever gives you that "in the moment" feel. I just have to get started, get the energy moving and the composition will take on a life of its own. It's a beautiful ride every time.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
This is always a super tough one to narrow down! So, so many artists have influenced me through the years. From the classics of Mozart and Chopin all the way down to the Beatles, the amazing artists of the 60's, and 70's, the jazz legends...if it moves me then it's good! I continue to be deeply influenced by Phish. Their live performances are still absolutely incredible to me and serve as a continual source of inspiration. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Emancipator, Tycho, Jesper Ryom, Quantic, Sol Rising, and Bonobo.
Who would be a dream collaboration for you?
Without a doubt, a collaboration with Trey Anastasio.
In the electronic world, Bonobo, Tycho, Emancipator - working with any of those artists would be incredible.
Do you have a piece of advice you carry with you that you like to pass on to other musicians?
Blazing your own trail as a full time dedicated musician is not easy, but it certainly has its payoffs. Tenacity, persistence, patience, passion, resiliency, focus, grit, thick-skin -- to me, these are the qualities you need to make it in this industry.
Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
As I mentioned, Aphelyon is my new solo project. I just released the debut self titled single and will be releasing new material in the coming months. I am preparing for a solo Fall 2022 US tour throughout the south and northeast. I also have plans on creating full band arrangements for some special live performances in the Charleston SC region.
Please let everyone know where they can keep up with you and your music!
