Music and Inspiration with Bennett!

Hello Bennett! So lovely to speak with you today!
Hey there! Thanks for having me!
Tell us about your latest project!
Sure! So I recently released my EP "Love Letters" back in July. My single "Lightning" has been the highlight of that project hitting 150,000 streams on Spotify. "Lightning" is a song about metaphorically getting intimate with someone, but it's truly up to the listener to interpret how they please. I think something really cool and fun with music is when you can write one thing, have it be perceived as such, but really it's about something different. People can listen to "Lightning" and decide for themselves how they feel or what they think about it. That's the fun with that song. Some might listen and think, oh he's singing about some bad weather, or some might think I'm singing about something much more romantic and sexy. So it's all up to the listener. "Lightning" is out now everywhere.
What is a dream venue for you to perform in?
So I have 2 dream venues. Madison Square Garden will always be my dream venue to perform in. I grew up in New York City and I have seen a variety of concerts and sports events there as a kid. It will be a total full circle moment when one day I get to perform inside MSG. And the 2nd is a morning show. The Today Show does a summer concert series in the promenade of their building and again, as a kid, I remember going to see Mariah Carey. My parents let me miss school in the morning and my dad took me out to see her perform at like 4 AM. We waited and waited and finally, Mariah performed. Afterward, my friend, who was with me as well, and I got to meet her and that was like one of my greatest childhood memories. I remember distinctly the feeling it gave me and if I'm able to give that to someone as well, that's really special for me. So that's why the Today Show is a dream venue for me too.
If you were to open up your most used streaming service, what are five songs that would be on your most played list?
Five songs, let's see. Ariana Grande's "Needy", but the live version from her Netflix Special. Next would be "Guilty" by Sevyn Streeter, Chris Brown, and A$AP Ferg. "Go Down Deh" by Spice and "Mona Lisa" by Kelly Zul because I love me some good Dancehall music. And lastly, I'd say "2 Much" by Justin Bieber. That song really hits my heart and resonates with me on a variety of levels, and it's Bieber, so what's not to like? All those are definitely my Top 5 most played right now.
Do you have a favorite ’90s jam?
For sure! So if you cant tell I'm a huge Mariah Carey fan and my #1 favorite song of all time is "Always Be My Baby". That was the first Mariah song I've ever heard as a kid and it made me feel chills for the first time when listening to music. That song right there is an experience every time I listen to it. Honestly, music doesn't get any better 90's Mariah Carey.
What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
My favorite movie soundtrack is probably Dreamgirls. Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce will forever live in my head with their vocals in that movie. I remember when it came out too I was utterly obsessed. And I have to give some love to my girl Mariah with the Glitter soundtrack as well. That one will always be a favorite.
Favorite song to belt out in the car?
Hmmm. I have several so if I had to choose one it would probably be "Sorry" by Justin Bieber. I'm a huge Bieber fan too and that is my favorite song by him. It always gets me pumped up and I have a good time with it. Or any Ariana Grande song also to be fair.
How important do you think it is for artists to know and understand music history?
I think that it's always important to know the history of any field someone wants to work in, especially with music. I actually find it quite interesting to learn about the origins of Pop and R&B music, and the industry in general. Some might disagree and feel knowledge could be taught in other subjects but I'm a firm believer that learning about the history of what you do goes a long way.
Any upcoming projects you want us to know about?
Later this year I'm going to be releasing a "Lightning" remix which will feature a few artists. And then I have Part 2 of "Love Letters" dropping as well. I'm really looking forward to getting a remix going for that song. It's my favorite song of mine by far so it'll be cool to get some artist on there with me.
