  • Hot Sounds In The City

Derrick Hensley, Frontman for Sweet Pickles is here to start off the conversation about his band Sweet Pickles!

Happy New Year! How did you start yours off musically? DH: We dropped Higher Idills in 2021 and in 2022, we have the road to look forward to as we take our debut record on tour. With the steam that we’ve generated in two years as a band, two very challenging years, we anticipate no situation we cannot overcome together. Higher Idills has allowed us to meet and work with established artists. We’ve been fortunate to meet and talk with their fans - we hope to consider them our fans now. So shout out to those guys, the bands and the fans, come see us on the road! -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley What hot sounds in the city should fans be listening to of yours right now? DH: Arms Wrapped Around You Forever has recently found placement on a few playlists, one being the top new rock songs from Washington DC on ReverbNation. DC is the backdrop of Higher Idills. Personally, I can’t spin it without hearing my neighborhood in the negative space. -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley How has the reception been to new music? DH: Sweet Pickles broke the top 5, making it to #3 on the Washington DC ReverbNation rock charts and is currently riding it out in the top 10 at #6. Recently while playing Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg, VA, supporting Everclear, Art Alexakis watched the whole set from stage left, bobbing his head the entire time. That’s something we will never forget - his smile threw me off for a minute. Vinnie from Sponge said when we opened for them at DC’s Rock ’n Roll Hotel “I like the blues quality in your punk music. I could see you sharing the stage with us or Marcus King Band. That’s pretty cool.” -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley What are you looking forward to most when you perform in front of an audience this year? DH: We’re most looking forward to being together in a room with our fans because they are a critical part of our process. After all, I don’t want to make music that no one wants to hear. When I play a song live for an audience it becomes clear to me whether or not I’ve written a good song. There’s no way I can craft a song I believe in unless the fans believe it in too. I rarely record a song that hasn’t withstood the rigors of live performance and the response of a live crowd. -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley What was the intention set for your music? DH: All music is therapeutic and ours is too. We’ve been associated with the sound of rebellion but it’s a label we don’t want or deserve. Rather, Sweet Pickles is an introspective navel gaze for the introvert who likes to drive a little too fast with the music up a little too loud. What differentiates us from others in the rock format is that we place the guitars upfront in the mix which creates tension in the music that we can use to impact our fans. -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley What was the most important message to impart with your music? DH: The message from the music is “Take a good look at yourself: take as long as you need”. How do you want your fans to treat themselves after listening to your music? DH: I want the fans to treat themselves to some ice cream after the show and try not to let any melt on their shirts while they talk about all of the hot shit they just saw on the Sweet Pickles stage. I hope they always treat themselves and each other kindly. -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley What is a song of yours that you have on repeat right now to set the mood for 2022? DH: Our attitude for 2022 is represented by the first song on the record, “Vacillate”. The song reminds everyone they’re responsible for themselves and the world is dangerous. Get smart, watch your ass, and do the work. Don’t be sorry. Be awesome. It’s ok to change your mind because without vacillation in your viewpoint, no growth is possible. The song was written in 2019. -Derrick Hensley, guitars/vox, IG @derrickatomhensley
